March Meeting - BASH & Flash Talks

|

Bring your research, tell us a little about it. 10-20minutes for a flash talk.

We'll also do some much needed planning for BASH. It looks like BASH has become our smaller, simpler, faster "Quahogcon" for this year. The fund raising it could bring would help us with QuahogCon next year so we don't have to dig into anyones pockets. If you want to see BASH (and indirectly QuahogCon) actually happen, you won't want to miss this meeting. DC401 is gonna rock 2011! Let the games begin!

Show up around 1830. Discussion and Presentation to start around 1900. We'll all probably be hanging out until 2230 or 2300.

BYOB!

Lots of FREE PARKING!!!

Date/Time: March 2nd, 2011 - 1830-2300.

Polymathic Brown Professor/Engineer/Maker/Hacker Kipp Bradford will be talking about his latest engineering exploits in a presentation titled "Hacking the grid: a DIY air conditioner/heat pump does demand management. No lead jackets needed." I'm a huge physics buff and anything to do with thermodynamics and it's practical applications is a personal favorite of mine. We've been looking at better ways to heat/cool The Brain Tank, maybe we will find the answers we need?....

February's meeting is gonna ROCK!. We will be discussing QuahogCon, among other fun things. The New RFID system for The Brain Tank. We also have a HACKER PARTAAAY to talk about. Lasers?... Beer Pong?... Make it to this meeting and have your say regarding the direction of DC401 in 2011. Let the games begin!

I'll put out some glowsticks or xmas lights on a UPS. Show up around 1830. Discussion and Presentation to start around 1900. We'll all probably be hanging out until 2230 or 2300.

Robots!

For January, we have Jim Tabele giving a talk on the various robotics platforms available and how one codes for each of them. Jim knows what he's talking about, since he runs the Old Fashioned Robotics Store here in Providence.

We're going to put some glow sticks on either side of the Kinsley Ave entry to lead folks to the right place, since it's kind of a PITA to find. Show up around 1830. Talk starts around 1900. We'll all probably be hanging out until 2230 or 2300.

For December's meeting, Mike Umbricht is going to give a talk about the recent historic preservation work that has happened at the Ladd Observatory at Brown University. They've been rebuilding the telescopes, pendulum clocks and telegraph system to their original 1890s working conditions. This is the kind of stuff that Steampunk wishes it could be. This should be a really cool talk about some very old tech.

ATTENTION!!! NEW LOCATION!!! NEW TIME!!!!

Agent5 has offered up The Brain Tank as a place for us to meet. We're going to try it out in December and see how everyone likes it. It's not as centrally located as AS220, but it has ample free parking and allows us to have a later start time, which will hopefully allow more folks to make it to the meeting after work.

Since there's no bar from which to buy beer, we'll be free to BYOB. Since our extra funds aren't going to be going to the bar, show your support for The Brain Tank by taking a rummage in your misc electronic parts bins and bring some parts you aren't using.

Jimmie P Rodgers is going to be in town for the whole month of June doing an Artist in Residence gig at AS220. We figured while he was in town, we'd grab him to give an overview talk on circuit bending. Unfortunately, we don't have the time for whole workshop, but you'll get enough info so you can head home and try it out on your own.

Date/Time: 1730 - June 2nd, 2010
Location: AS220 Performance Space - 115 Empire St, Providence

For December's meeting we have a talk from one of our members who you might not recognize at first glance these days. Joe Pepin has transitioned to Joan Pepin and will be speaking on the technical details of being transgendered. This will be a very interesting and enlightening talk.

Gender (as opposed to physical sex) is a social construct and is therefore susceptible to manipulation and what hackers may call 'social engineering'. Speaking from personal experience, I will discuss various techniques that some members of the transgender community use to alter the perception of their gender. This talk will not focus on the "why", but rather the "how", and may have applications relevant to the broader hacker/social-engineering community.

We've got a real treat for the October Meeting. Andy Pavlo, a CS graduate student at Brown will come by to talk about his research project called Graffiti Networks, which apparently landed him and his collaborators into a little hot water last spring. Should be a very interesting talk with a good 'lessons learned' section.

"In response to the lack of user anonymity and long-term data persistence in existing P2P systems, we developed the Graffiti Network distributed file sharing protocol that uses multiple third-party storage sites as a data replication and transfer medium between clients. Our approach is to use publically available web sites to store multiple copies of shared content. We use the term graffiti for our work since we are storing data in a way that non-network participants may regard as unsightly or unwanted vandalism."

Note the special night! AS220 once again has Action Speaks! on Wednesday nights this month, so we got bumped to the second Monday.

For the September Meeting, yours truly will be giving a presentation and demo of creating prototype printed circuit boards using the Roland Modela milling machine available for use at AS220 Labs.

Sometimes you've got an idea for an electronics project and want to knock out a prototype board right away. There are a couple of different methods available to the homebrew board maker. One of those is using a milling machine to shave away the copper on a board where you don't want contacts. I'll give a short presentation on how this process works followed by a demo of creating an actual PCB for a project I'm working on with entr0py.

Date/Time: 2 Sept 2009 - 1730-1900

For the July meeting, Dennis Brown is bringing us a very interesting and current presentation about his observations of what's going on with the Iran Election.

A wide array of technologies have been deployed during the fallout after the election scandal in Iran, particularly by ordinary Iranian citizens. Some of these technologies have been purely disruptive, while others have resulted in an uncommon level of information dispersal and ad-hoc organization. This presentation is a discussion about the cyber-warfare tactics used in this conflict. It will explore the tools used, discuss their trustworthiness, effectiveness, reliability, and propose what tools future conflicts may employ.

Date/Time: 1 July 2009 - 1730-1900
Location: AS220, 115 Empire St, Providence. Directions

We don't have a speaker scheduled for this month, so this is a good chance for us to simply hang out, drink some beers and discuss the various projects we're all working on in our spare time. You don't need to bring a presentation or anything, just come on down and find some like-minded folks with whom to talk about your projects. You might just find some people to collaborate with and make your project go faster.

May Meeting - Hacker Jeopardy!

|

In preparation for the August pilgrimage to Defcon, we'll be holding Hacker Jeopardy tryouts this month. Unfortunately, this doesn't guarantee us a slot in the game in Vegas, but it'll be hella fun anyway. Since NickD wants to play this year, I'll be passing on my Hacker Jeopardy returning champion rights and hosting the event.

Come on down (oops, wrong game show), toss back a few cold ones and be entertained as we toss out the answers and see who comes up with the right questions.

Special Note: We're on a special night this month due to Action Speaks getting all the Wednesday night slots this month.

April Meeting - Nick D on DeDECTed

|

April Fool's day brings us a treat as Nick D presents on the deDECTed project.

DECT or Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications, is a standard used for various data communications devices, most commonly phones but also mobile POS systems. Mostly deployed in Europe and making leaps and boundsin the US DECT was the recent focus of some hackers in Germany who sought out to create a Linux stack and driver for DECT hardware. With this hardware you can intercept DECT communications where encryption is optional, including cordless phones.

At this talk Nick will talk in details about the Dedected project, it's goals and progress as well as demonstrate a live intercept of a DECT phone call and conversation.

We have at least two budding comedians in the group and one of them wants to see if he can entertain us for at least a half an hour for the February meeting. Not really sure what's on the topic list, but having listened to many a story of his in the past, I'm sure Pepin will amuse us all.

Date/Time: 4 Feb 2009 - 1730-1900
Location: AS220, 115 Empire St, Providence. Directions

We don't have Mitch Altman in town this January, but we're still going to do a kit build anyway. We've got 15 Conway's Game of Life Kits coming in along with all the right angle connectors we need to hook them all up together. Once they're all put together we'll hook them up and get some good pictures and video of them. Ideally, it would be cool if people marked them with their names and left them for a couple of weeks so we can install the whole thing in the gallery window on the street.

Dan's back in November with Part 2 of his Intro To Pen Testing series. This installment is on portscanning.

Scanning thousands of ports on hundreds of hosts take a long time and generates a ton of unnessecary network traffic. If you are trying to pwn a network or doing internet research this task can either make or break your goal. This talk hopes to give some insight into how portscanning works and ways to make the task simplier and easier to manage.

This month, we have Dennis Brown presenting an expanded version of the Asprox talk he'll be giving at ToorCon. They only gave him 20 minutes. We're giving him a whole hour.

The year 2008 has seen the rapid and pervasive rise of large-scale SQL Injection attacks as a mechanism for distributing malware. One of the most successful and interesting parties using this technique are the people behind the Asprox (aka Danmec) botnet. This presentation will discuss the reasons why the Asprox botnet is so successful and will lay bare the botnet in its entirety, explaining its structure, command and control architecture, describing executed attacks and diving into other aspects and details of this threat. Techniques to profile and detect infections and activity will be discussed, and code to detect & track the threat will be distributed.

Note! We're on a special night this month. AS220 has their Action Speaks! Series on the first, third and fourth Wednesdays, so we took the second Wednesday

XKCD Lisp Cycles Comic

For September's Meeting, Brandon and Tyler will be doing a screencast style demo of Common Lisp (CL). They'll be showing us all the cool things you can do with CL and try to convince us why we should give up the other languages we code in to use CL instead. Beyond learning about a different programming language, this talk is sure to stir up some animated discussion about the applicability of programming languages to various environments.

Since the bulk of us will be at Defcon in Vegas next Wednesday, there isn't going to be an August meeting. Most of your ought to know that, but I figured I'd post it just to be all official.
