My mother is a 5th grade teacher in a pretty tough neighborhood in RI. Her school is WAY underfunded and she currently has zero functioning computers for her kids to use. Keep in mind that these are kids who are all on free lunch programs and certainly do not have computers at home. Unfortunately the budget cuts also eviscerated any semblance of IT for the schools computers as well so there is very little chance of any broken systems getting fixed. I was wondering if any DC401ers had any old systems laying around that they would be willing to donate (old monitors would be welcome also). I was planning on installing linux on them (maybe Edbuntu? Suggestions?). The kids really only need basic web surfing and word processing capabilities but this would go a long way towards keeping them technologically up to date with their more fortunate peers. I will try to get tax vouchers for anyone who donates a system but I have never done this so I'm not sure how they value the systems. Additionally, if anyone has any time or expertise that they would be willing to give to this little project they will be richly compensated in pizza and beer.
